Title: Some sad news
Post by: Squeezy on Wednesday, June 3 2015 06:59PM GMT-1
I know that this will come as a bit of a shock to everyone here - and I hate to be the bearer of bad news - but as the webmaster here on the forum I know just how much the band means to everyone and how much support you've all given us over the years so it's only fair that you hear this direct from the horse's mouth rather than through some kind of dry press release.

Shortly after the last tour, Jon Boden felt that it was time for him to leave the band.  Despite several weeks of difficult discussion where we looked at all the possible options (sharing the songs out between the other members, getting a new lead singer, performing purely instrumental sets etc.) we have come to the conclusion that without Jon's trademark voice at the front of the band it simply would not be Bellowhead as we know it.  As a result, we have decided that the forthcoming tours in November and April 2016 will be our last as a band and our final show will be on May 1st 2016 at Oxford Town Hall where it all started.

I must point out that this is by no means an acrimonious split - more a parting of the ways.  The band are as close together in our decision making as we have ever been and it's not a decision we took lightly.  It is something that was probably inevitable at some point in time given the huge unwieldy nature of such a large collective band and we realise that this decision will make some people very unhappy indeed.  Indeed we're very sad about it too but I hope you can understand our decision and support any future musical projects that involve members of Bellowhead (which I'm sure will emerge in time!)

So there you have it - the dates for the final tours will be over on the Bellowhead website shortly.  I expect you can guess now why the announcement of dates has been delayed somewhat!  All that remains is for me, on behalf of the band, to thank you, dear Forumites, from the bottom of our hearts, for dedicating so much of your time and energy to the band.  You've stuck with us right from the beginning in a time without Twitter and Facebook - when everyone told us that you can't take a massive 11 piece folk band on the road ... we proved them wrong but I have a hunch that if it were not for you unbelievably dedicated and generous fans that it may never have taken off in the way that it did.

So thank you for taking the time to read this - we'll see you down the road.

Cheers

Squeezy

Just heard this on The Folk Show. I can fully understand why it's happened, but still sad. We'll definitely make sure we're there at Oxford Town Hall.
Wishing you all success in your other projects.

Hope we see more of your solo work, John x

It's sad news but thanks for coming here and telling us personally, Squeezy. It's much appreciated.

I found my way into English folk because of Bellowhead, so the band will always have a special place in my heart. I've met some lovely people along the way and made some fantastic friends, all of which wouldn't have happened without BH.

Thank you!

Thank you Squeezy for the post, very, very sad news.  To the exclamation of 'oh no' , daughter no 2 came running into the room wanting to know what had happened.  Bellowhead has give many, many people such joy, and have given our granddaughter a love of music.

Thanks for letting us know Squeezy. Wish I'd read this before listening to Mark Radcliffe - had to check the calendar to make sure it wasn't 1 April. Very, very sad news - but of course we'll all continue to support all members of the band in future projects.

Oh no! What will we all do now?   Must try and make sure we can get to Oxford in 2016, we were at the very first one!
(and I've just noticed that we're going to be away when they go on sale, hope there'll be some left when we get back!)

Sad news indeed. It must have been an incredibly difficult decision for Jon. Thank you for telling us, Squeezy. I suppose it was inevitably going to cone to an end one day, and better now than let it go stale and wait for people to fall out! The music, gigs and forum have made a genuine difference to my life and I can't thank the band (and you, Mark!) enough for all of it. Best of luck with whatever the future holds xxx

Its sad news. If it hadn't been for bellowhead i'd have never taken up concertina/melodeon and discovered the folk world or met lovely forumites.

I'm having an awful week anyway, so this is just the icing on the cake.
Squeezy - thanks for letting us know
Rest of the band - thanks for providing me (and others) with a lot of joy
Jon - whilst part of me is very tempted to kick you, I'm sure you don't make decisions like this lightly.

I was at the folk club when someone came and told me, so I read the email on his phone.  What are we going to do with all the spare money we'll have?

Thank you, Bellowhead and Mark, for 11 fantastic years.  Without you I'd still have a back that works but I'd be a less happy person.  It's been terrific, and I can't wait to see what happens to you all in the future.  But first, I've got a party to get ready for!

There's not much else to say really, you all seem to have already said everything that is in my mind, I'm just so glad to have been there whist it was happening, & I feel lucky to have met such a fantastic bunch of people!
Oh goodness I think my bank account is going to be a lovely shade of Red for quite some time!!

Thank you so much for everything, all of you.
I was out last night, on way to Rayna Gellert gig when I read the news. (Would never have discovered all this lovely music without Bellowhead)

We've all had a fantastic  time with more to come. Made some lovely friends, travelled (!!). Feel quite bereft.

But it's going to be one helluva farewell!

Thanks for explaining this so well. I am very sad, but you all have your own lives. I would agree that Bellowhead certainly couldn't carry on without Jon. Best wishes for the future, and I hope we'll have many opportunities to see you again. The St Barnabas gig was fantastic.

Had a bit of a worry earlier - Squeezy, will the forum stay live? Even if we all have to chip in to cover the cost of the webhost, it would be good to keep it going. Several of us travel further for Bellowhead gigs than we would for anything else, and it has occurred to me that some of us might not see eachother once the tours are over  :( I know there are other ways of staying in touch, but still...

I big thankyou from longcol and family for some great albums and even better gigs. You've given us a lot of pleasure, sore hands and hoarse throats!

So are we going to get a farewell live album...and do we get to suggest our favourite songs for the tour pretty please?

Hi there,

Don't worry about the forum - it's part and parcel of the Spiers & Boden website and we have no intention to shut that down.  It's not about to get a new facelift or anything like that - but will remain with the functionality it currently has (including the appalling amount of spam registrations - up to a thousand a day - which makes it nigh on impossible for new genuine members to register without me checking out every single one every day)

As for New Years Eve - we did have an enquiry about doing one - but I am unsure whether that will be firmed up now given the situation we're in.

Cheers

Squeezy

Gosh, just back from a long weekend away without proper internet access. Bit of a shock, and sad to hear of course, but I'm jolly glad we've got a final year to get in plenty of gigs and create some more happy memories. I can't overstate what an impact you guys have had on my life with the discovery of folk music, and all the friends I've made through gigs and music and dancing, so it's been the best possible however many years it's been  :)

I will certainly get to Wimbledon in November, and hmm, wondering if it's a bit too much to try and sneak Aylesbury in on the way back from Liz's wedding...?! Shame Newcastle's not a Saturday.

April ought to be Reading and London (not having the hen night that weekend then!) and of course Oxford  ;D :aemo_spibod_wave:

I want to go to the Nottiingham show on 30th April, as it's seated (to begin with) & I can take Elouise, my granddaughter to see them for the last time, which means that there is no way that I'll be able to go to Oxford for the 'Party'! Gutted, but the penultimate show will have to suffice!!

I am probably being incredibly dense but how do the venues etc know we are on the mailing list?  In mitigation I had granddaughter (2 & a half) all day Friday until 2pm on Saturday then grandson (1 year old) at 6pm Saturday until noon on Sunday and have lost the power of thought and speech, you really do not want to know how long this email has taken me..... Is it just that we are buying tickets on Wednesday?

Hello everyone!   Long time since I've been in here!    Hope I'm still welcome!

We had MFP on his computer doing London, I was on iPad doing Oxford, plus various other dates as well.   Got all of them, but the seated ones not necessarily good seats.   Pissed off with gigs and tours as had to pay booking fee for each ticket and then transaction fee.

Hate to think how much spent!

Well... that went quickly!

I got Oxford tickets, apparently only just! Also got seated tickets for Reading (so Alex can see them too.)

Really sorry to those who didn't get any yet. It all feels like a lottery and I hate lotteries.

My guess is that not all tickets were sold in this batch - that more will be available when they go on general sale on Friday. Good luck...!

Cheers

I had the Oxford tickets sold out whilst paying message too - a bit rubbish really selling the "tickets" whilst in the process of paying. Bit pessimistic about chances of getting anything on Friday - might just have to wait until venues start selling tickets. :(

I really don't know what went wrong. I had pre registered with gigs and tours, and clicked on the link and the payment - it said it had processed it, but, as I said, no confirmation.

gutted.
have to go to work now...

It seems that seated venues had a timer of around six minutes to reserve seats whilst standing venues had no buffer so places were swiped from under your nose (so to speak).

I also had no luck with Oxford, only had to enter the cvc number but all had gone by the time it went through, managed to get 2 for Bury and 2 for Southend, had a look at the Palladium but need to check with the other half as to what he would like to do. Well done to those who managed to get the tickets they wanted.

I've managed to get Torquay, Brighton, Southend, London Palladium (£50!) and Watford.
Couldn't chose seats so not front row, but am in row B for Palladium.

Really, really want Oxford of course - will try again Friday. Hope everyone gets Oxford tickets that want them.

Post by: Nick on Wednesday, June 10 2015 10:51AM GMT-1
From the sound of it, the booking process was messed up if they weren't holding standing tickets while credit card details were entered. That is very unfair. (and yes, for Reading I had a 6-minute timer pop up while I was sorting out the seats.)

When booking I had my card out and ready, and then saw Paypal was accepted too. I went with Paypal as I guessed it would be quicker to do - only needed a password and a confirm button and it filled in all the rest of the details for me. It sounds like this was a lucky guess.

So I'd suggest, on Friday, if you have a Paypal account, go with that rather than trying to enter credit card and address details from scratch.

Cheers

Nick

I was using Paypal too but was still too late for Oxford. But yes, I did have a 6 minute timer for the seated gigs - that seems like a massive flaw in the system.

Hello! I haven't been here for ages either.

Tickets booked for sunny sahfend. Trying to book on phone via link whilst at work, with a timer going at the bottom of the screen, was a very slightly stressful experience. I was so overjoyed once I'd managed it I think my colleagues thought I was a bit odd. Or perhaps they have now confirmed their suspicions to that effect. ;)

So sorry to hear that Jon felt it was time to leave the band though - I hope he's ok,  you know, voice-wise, and all that. I also hope it'll mean more chance of seeing Spiers and Boden back on the circuit and more Remnant Kings and solo gigs from Jon.

I've offered Vikki the ticket I got for Chris :) (he's a bit sad, poor soul, but he's coming to Reading, so it should balance out - we thought it was fairer that it should go to a long-term fan for the very final gig).

Utterly disgraceful. I noticed many of the venues put a limit on the number of tickets you could book. This was actually a pain as I wanted 7 tickets for Manchester and was only allowed 6.

However, Chesterfield, Manchester, Llandudno, Liverpool, Halifax, Oxford = 75

Yellow hanky and kazoo poised!

Confession time - 3 years ago I had some poor seats for The Lowry gig (messed up on booking day). Then the week before the gig there were two front row seats on Ebay for £50 each. I succumbed. I tried to sell/give away my original tickets, but it was too late. But I had a wonderful night.
P.S I was encouraged to spend that much by my husband as he felt guilty when we'd had to miss a gig in the summer re farming.
But - I don't condone scooping up blocks of tickets for profiteering.

Oh yes Barbara, much better today and as you say lots to look forward to hope everyone else has has a good weekend also.  It is absolutely disgraceful seeing tickets being touted around, wouldn't mind so much if you knew the band would benefit but it is still awful.  On a football forum Paul belongs to any spares, extras etc are offered at face value to other fans but you still see the same thing happening I really am at a loss as to how it can be changed.  Think I would have done the same Strickley if I had been if the same position.

I can see why some events have a no resale policy. It aught to be a rule you can't re-sell tickets for more than face value plus p&p.

A lovely message on facebook

A huge apology to all the disappointed fans who couldn’t get tickets for the final night in Oxford.
This is a very small show and only around 400 tickets were put on sale. 100 were sold pre-sale to the mailing list and the remainder went on sale on Friday morning. Several thousand people tried to buy these tickets and on each occasion they sold out in less than a minute.
But we’d like to assure everyone that touts did not get all the tickets. A handful did instantly appear on re-selling sites but unfortunately there is no way to stop individuals buying tickets and then reselling them at any price, and in fact we only found 6 tickets being re-sold.
The real problem was just the huge demand for very few tickets.
We chose the Town Hall because it has a special place in our hearts as the first venue we ever performed in. We knew that not everyone who wanted to come would be able to buy tickets but we have been completely overwhelmed by how many of you actually did want to share in our very final concert.
So - sorry to everyone who wanted to be there but can’t, but we can assure you that we’ll be making every remaining concert as special as we possibly can.
Thank you all for your support over the years
Love
Bellowhead x

Torquay started late - 8 15pm, and didn't finish until about 10 45pm.

Loiuse P and I are meteing in the nearby Wetherspoons about 5 30 tomorrow for food, and Lorna and her friend will be there about  6 30, if anyone wants to join us.

EDIT - Wetherspoons does not have good reviews. If anyone wants to meet up, I'm now meeting Louise outside the theatre at 5 30, and we'll find somewhere nearby to eat. If you want to text me. My number is 07968 280296.

Great gig tonight in Chesterfield - started a bit slowly but they really hit form about 4 songs in with "Trip to Bucharest" followed by "Jordan" then "Jack Robinson" - then full speed ahead and the last hour was the best I've seen them play (well OK JB forgot the words a couple of times). Brendans dancing was hilarious, great to see Rachel front stage more, Sam goes from strength to strength - bit of a shame Pete was sat down behind a drum kit most of the time - but with 11 great musicians and showmen on the top of their game no wonder my legs ache, my hands are sore and I'm nearly hoarse.

Slightly annoying that they weren't on til 9 which meant 2 hours standing round after the doors opened - IMHO Kerston Cobblers looked good but were very lightweight - sounded like the Magic Numbers but without the good songs. Still, got back to Sheffield just in time for a couple of pints in the local.

Can't wait to see them in Sheffield April.

Since finding the purple knickers "someone" threw at me on top of my concertina .... any thoughts of tears were lost ... and the general absurdity of the whole Bellowhead project took over ... which only really made me smile!!!

A massive thank you to all the stalwarts of the message board who have been the backbone of support for us throughout the years ... it made me very happy to have a huge number of you at the last gig and I could see every one of your faces in the setting of the Town Hall.

An even massiver (I know that's not a word) thank you to everyone who contributed to and produced the amazing book and card that we were all given.  I knew you lot were dedicated, but that was seriously special ... and it seems to have been put together with all the same fondness and humour that the band have always approached the live gigs.  Music at this level is definitely a two-way thing.  It has been making me smile like a lunatic every time I look at it!!!   :D :D :D

It was a brilliant night and a fantastic finish to 12 years of wonderful music.

For me, personally, it was fantastic to be back in Oxford as I attended my first ever folk festival there in 2006. I can't believe ten years has gone by so quickly.

I'm so glad you like the book, Squeezy. I read my copy last night whilst drinking coffee in the Wheatley Travelodge. It's a lovely thing and I think captures the spirit of both band and fans well. I don't think that I'll ever see another band that could combine serious musicianship with silliness like Bellowhead.

You have brought so much joy to our lives over the last twelve years. I don't know how I would have coped with the last year, losing the job I loved, without music to help me through. The sheer exuberance of your playing and the energy you guys have is amazing - I wish I could bottle it. I know you put the same energy into everything you do, so I can't wait to hear what else you come up with. Good luck and my love and very best wishes to you all for the future.

Let's look forward to the future projects of each member of the band now.

For me, personally, it was fantastic to be back in Oxford as I attended my first ever folk festival there in 2006. I can't believe ten years has gone by so quickly.

Snap - it was perfect to end at a venue that I so strongly associate with Bellowhead and those early mad years when I was first discovering folk music. It was magical to be there in a small venue, with every single person there wanting to make the night special. And huge thanks to Mark as well of course, for making sure we were all able to be there to celebrate with you. Absolutely glorious. Thanks chaps, and although I'll miss your joyous cacophony, I'm looking forward to all those new projects you'll all be hatching in years to come.  :aemo_spibod_wave: :aemo_spibod_wave:

P.s. Extra thanks for having the last hurrah to the week before my wedding and not the week after! I would have been distraught  :o

It really was a very special night to round off a lovely 12 years.  There won't be anything else to fill the void - that mix of instruments, voices, fun and continuity.  I wish I could have got my thoughts down on paper to add to the book but I couldn't.

I've had a horrible year and Bellowhead going has helped me through while adding to the horribleness.  Thank you all - band and fans.  And a special thank you to Mark for everything you've done.

Squeezy, that was a lovely message. Sorry we couldn't be there for the last show, but have memories of very many special nights over the years. Festival shows on a big stage were always amazing, but also small venues had an intimacy. And the New Years Eve parties   :aemo_sdnce:   And the album launches.  :aemo_sdnce:
Thank you all for the music, and for bringing us all together. Have met some lovely people and hopefully we'll carry on meeting them here and there. And special thanks to Mark for everything.

And all of the band - please carry on doing what you do, in different guises. Wishing you all success and happiness xxx

Thank you for 12 amazing years and all the friends we've made along the way.

I'm not sure my legs will ever be the same after the last night!  Looking forward to the book - and hoping the forum continues! - to that end I will be adding some upcoming gigs for May!

I'm really glad you like the book and card  :)

I haven't really got anything that hasn't already been said, but enormous thanks for everything. The last gig was really special, and I'm so glad to have been there (thank you, Mark!). Although there is now a big gap in my life, I look forward to seeing what happens next.

Can't add anything that hasn't already been said. We were relative (2010) latecomers to the Bellowhead Behemoth but have had a lovely time following the band round, met some lovely people and been to some places we probably wouldn't have been to otherwise. You also as a band inspired Emily to take music a bit further. Who knows,in the future we might all cross paths at a festival somewhere when she's on the bill!
All the best to everyone - onward!

Since finding the purple knickers "someone" threw at me on top of my concertina .... any thoughts of tears were lost ... and the general absurdity of the whole Bellowhead project took over ... which only really made me smile!!!

I'm quite surprised you weren't all showered with undergarments on Sunday!

What a lovely post Squeezy, you've managed to make me smiley and weepy at the same time!  All the best for the future and I look forward to seeing what the individual members of Bellowhead will do next.

Thanks for all the brilliant tunes (Especially 'If You Will Not Have Me'. Still my favourite!) and all the daftness. It's been an absolute joy, every single gig. Whilst the big band will be missed, look forward to whatever you all get up to in the future.
Thank you as to Mark who's been so lovely to everyone on the forum.

Thanks Squeezy - really lovely message - and thank you all for the wonderful music

and thanks to everyone - what a journey we've been on (quite literally - dread to think what my mileage has been!)

So grateful to Mark for sorting out the tickets for the final gig - I'm so glad so many of us could be there to mark the occasion

Look forward to whatever comes next, and hope to see you all again

btw Squeezy,  I expect we'll all return to the forum now and then - we had a secret facebook group to sort out the card and book! Seems to have worked. (and if you need any help with admin on the forum, just say the word!)

Carting the cards around to gigs (they've seen quite a few bands!) was interesting - I don't know how we didn't get rumbled! Paul was inches away from them while Dawn and David were signing them - we must have come across as really odd, clustering round them to keep them out of sight  ;D

We must have looked so rude! Sorry, Paul, if you happen to read any of this!

Anyway, I'm off to folk dance soon - something else I might never have done if it weren't for Bellowhead  :)

Finally i'm back! And just in time to for the goodbyes. Well its been one hell of an adventure hasn't it?
Mark is an absolute hero for getting us those tickets, i would have been 'utterly' devastated not to have been there.
And as for my letter in the book, i know it reads fairly poorly grammatically but i just wrote what i was feeling at the time and didn't change it because i wanted it to be as real as i was feeling while i wrote it. So if i came across as shambolic and clumsy then that's just how it was.   :P
Thanks for 'everything' and even though 'this' chapter is over i'm looking forward to whatever happens next.
Love to you all, band and fans alike.  :-*

Just in case anyone on here wasn't on the secret squirrel farewell book FB group when Becky and I have finished getting new last gig submissions we will upload a link to the online only version of the book and I'll make sure the link is copied onto here too.  Thanks again to everyone who helped a) keep it secret and b) participated.  I'm really proud to call such a lovely bunch of you all friends.  And I am very bizarrely (because I'm a hard nosed cow as you all know:-)) emotional still xxx

Another huge thankyou to Squeezy, for not only the band but for this forum - without which I wouldn't have so many friends, or spend evenings singing Bulgarian songs (meeting Mandy on here led to me going singing with the tremendous Abbie Lathe). And magically of Mark to arrange tickets for the final gig, which was a total blast. I associate Oxford with so many of you, with late night ice-creams and with the wonderful Bellowhead. It really was the most amazing band, and their followers the most friendly bunch of people around.

Had a final email this morning from the Bellowhead mailing list, it made me feel a bit sad, but I'm glad that they have kept all our names on a list and Will be transfering them all to the individual band members mailing lists, to keep us up to date with their future projects. Best wishes & good luck to everyone in the future xx
