Title: TV/Radio Alerts
Post by: Shelley on Thursday, April 16 2009 11:10AM GMT-1
I don't think we've got a thread like this so I've started one!

Mac and Saul are on Radio 3's Late Junction tonight, 11.15 pm.  I'll be folkclubbing, so hurrah for listen again!

We'll probably be on our way back from Benji at the Stables and I don't know where Radio 3 is so Anna might have to do that while I'm driving!

Me neither - Mac has sent a message to everyone in the Facebook group which is how I knew!  This is the message:

Hi folk fans,

I know what you're thinking!

You're thinking, what shall I do at 11.15 this evening.

Fear not!

The answer is at hand!

Catch Mac & Saul on Late Junction, Radio 3.

Phew!

M&S

And here is a link to the programme:

Can't find the wavelength for R3.  It's a saved one on the DAB radio and I think it's between R2 and R4 on the old fashioned twiddly radio.

Well we managed to find Radion 3 and listened to everything on the journey home, but there was no sign of Mac and Saul until just as I dropped Anna off at about 5 past midnight when the tinkling sound of a hammered dulcimer wafted through the car.  And that was it.  I got home about 10 mins later but there was no mention of an interview.  Were we expecting one?

Carolyn

PS You get some funny stuff in World Music, don't you?

They were good, weren't they?  I liked the first couple of things she played too, and the Russian one was fun.  What makes something World Music rather than just Music, though?  Or is that like asking "What is folk music?"!

I liked Genticorum - can see why Shelley admires them! I had hoped we would hear more than one track from Mac and Saul even if there was to be no interview. Good to hear Chris Wood too. I assume World
Music is supposed to be traditional (at least in style) to the country of origin?

Hurrah!  Another convert!  Worth seeing live if you can - so much energy, and Pascal can sing, play fiddle and do foot percussion all at the same time!  They're in the UK rather a lot over the summer it seems, but I can't get to any of the festivals they are playing at  :'(

Yes, so please stop it  ;) and have a look at this: http://www.frootsmag.com/content/features/world_music_history/

I liked Genticorum too. Though I thought they might be 'Le Vent do Nord' for a while...  ;)

I'm sure I'd read in fRoots that their album had been produced by someone connected with 'Le Vent Du Nord'. I like them both but 'Le Vent du Nord' just shade it for me. Their last album is a cracker.

Were Genticorum the ones on first or second?  I think they were French-speaking, but I can't find the Music Played section on the new revamped BBC radio website.  Grr.

I like Martin Clunes and tried very very hard not to compare him with Leonard Rossiter in the part of Reggie Perrin. The original series went on far too long, but at the start was very good. I hope this doesn't go the same way, MC deserves better. But I'd like to see him in something where he can be happy and - maybe a bit mad again, like in the early days of MBB? He always looks so downtrodden and world-weary in almost everything. I know the way he looks has something to do with that, but let's have a bit of happiness - please?

Thursday 30th July, BBC4 7:30PM. Hallé PROM! Live from the Royal Albert Hall! I will be singing Medelssohn's Lobgesang in the 2nd half which starts at around 8.15. With the Hallé Orchestra, Hallé Choir and Hallé Youth Choir!
I will be sat on the 4th Row, on the right (as you look at the screen) second from the end.

Have a great time Helen.  I won't be able to watch live but hope to catch it on the iPlayer.  Make sure you wear some makeup or you'll look deathly pale (you probably know that already!)  The first time I sang with my choir was live on the Beeb and the camera was right next to the side of my face.  I looked dreadful!

Title: Re: TV/Radio Alerts
Post by: Stephenw on Friday, July 31 2009 04:19PM GMT-1
The TV coverage is three half hour programmes. Each one devoted to a different act :

Lucinda Williams
Oumou Sangare
Los Lobos

So no UK stuff at all. I think  BBC TV don't really like folk all that much...

I think a letter/email of complaint is in order.

Dear POV,
we the undersigned are very dissapointed by your coverage of Cambridge FF.
Where is the folk music?

p.s. Shelley is upset there's not even any mention of Genticorum.

once more it will have ot be down to people taking rrecordings on their mobiles and putting them on youtube to get any decent coverage.

Your team gave them a really good run for their money - well done! Do you get anything for going even though you don't beat the Eggheads? A commemorative eggcup or something? We had a nice little "goody-bag" on Going for Gold.

Apparently there is a snippet of Bellowhead in this edition of Rude Britannia - not for the faint hearted! (rude words and toilet humour)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00srf2d/Rude_Britannia_A_History_Most_Satirical_Bawdy_Lewd_and_Offensive/

(BH can be heard about 2 minutes in - don't know if there is any more later on.  I may not be able to cope the bawdiness of the programme!)

Post by: maureen on Tuesday, June 15 2010 12:55AM GMT-1
Thanks for the link Shelley - it was a very interesting programme - did you stick with it? Bellowhead made an appearance again later, with a snippet of London Town. Also on the soundtrack were the Gloworms and Tom Waits. There was a bit about Broadside ballads, and Vic Gammon from the folk degree at Newcastle appeared. I liked the way the cutouts made the presenters appear to be part of the cartoons!

I only caught the Jim bit too and thought it was Seth for a few bars. I'm going to have to listen again to the whole show too.  For some reason Ethan's Grandad gets an email form Jon Boden which Anna and I don't get even though we've ticked the box for going on the mailing list!  He's no idea why he gets it but he forwards it to us anyway.

Yes it was brilliant - As You Like It at the Old Vic - even had music and bit of morris (which caused much amusement and nudging of ribs from my friend....) As for Cold Blows The Wind ;D Loved it - the production is incredible - and having read Pete's blog on the Associates falsetto bit it was spot on!!!  The sound is so different to Matachin - really sophisticated..roll on 4th October although my other half is a music journo and has reviewed their stuff for the mag he writes for before so I've got my fingers crossed he'll get an advance copy ;)

Those two songs MH played make me think of fairytales - you know that odd sort of mix of nice and horrible and scary that sends shivers down your spine?

Nice to see Nancy & James up for a couple of nominations, but unfortunately, as lovely as Queen of Waters is, nothing on that list is even close to as good as Hollow Point. Or Handmade Life. May well be Chris Wood's year. Also very odd to see RT up for a nomination, as he's done very little live work in the UK this year.  ???

Fisherman's Friends are an oddity. They were 'discovered' by Show of Hands about 15 years ago, and should sound like this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vUqeDPZZ80. Unfortunately, they recently got a contract with Universal and some eejit thought it would be a good idea to put awful twee accompaniment so they now sound like second rate musicians in the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland. Such a shame.

Fisherman's Friends should be down for Live Act rather than Group. They were show-stealers and we thoroughly enjoyed their set at Beautiful Days last year.

Meanwhile... The Hancock Awards 2011 are now open for nominations  8)

I wonder if BBC4 has got a folk theme that weekend or something...its a bit unusual to have two folk orientated programs so close to each other.

I spotted the camera's at Stowmarket although from a distance....wondered what it was for at the time. lol!

They did 'New York Girls' at a gig we went to in Wiltshire - where was it Firebird? I can't recall, only that it seemed to finish very late! - so heard that version before the Bellowhead version. Brill  ;D

It was just after 9am and they only showed part of the video of NYG. The interview with Jon, John, Sam and Ed was good. Sian is obviously a fan. It was very relevant to have the band on the programme as they had had a topic on happiness earlier. It was just a shame that they didn't play live. I was only able to see it as I have a few days off.

Dave Eyre has asked me to plug that fact that his programme "Thank Goodness It's Folk" on Sheffield Live was presented by none other than Jon Boden today.  It's available as a 2 podcasts here (one for each hours):

http://www.sheffieldlive.org/podcast/index.php?cat=Thank%20Goodness%20its%20Folk

Last week's guest presenter was Fay Hield, but due to a power cut in the building, it didn't broadcast.  It should be going out at a later date.

For those who are interested - here's what Jon played: (and if you haven't listened yet and want a surprise, look away now!)

Moore Moss Rutter: William Taylor’s Tabletop Hornpipe/The Savage Hornpipe
James Fagan & Nancy Kerr: The Turtle Dove
Tim Hart and Maddy Prior: Copshawholme Fair
La Bottine Souriante: Un dimanche au matin
Kate and Anna McGarrigle: Blues in D
Martin Simpson: The Four Angels
Moore Moss Rutter: The Galway Shawl
Steeleye Span: Lovely on the Water
Eliza Carthy: Sheath and Knife
Kate Rusby: The Radio Sweetheart
Planxty: Cunla
The Horseflies: The Human Fly
Moore Moss Rutter: The Drummer/Mount Hills
Mike Waterson: The Scarecrow
Tom Waits: The Briar and the Rose
Tim Eriksen: The Garden Hymn
Nic Jones: Clyde Water
Michelle Shocked: Memories of East Texas
Kroke: (Balkan tune in Klezmer style)
June Tabor: Seven Summers
Dave Webber/Jonny Collins/Pete Watkinson: Fire Marengo
Jethro Tull: Skating Away on the Thin Ice of a New Day
James Findlay: British Man of War
Faustus: The Brisk Lad

There was a also a snippet of a tune at the end but it wasn't introduced.  I think for me, the biggest surprise was Michelle Shocked.  Fantastic to hear her played on the radio!  I really enjoyed the mix of music on the programme, and it was nice to be introduced to some "new" artists.

Most of the archive footage, and more besides, can be seen on the BFI 2 disc DVD "Here's a Health to the Barley Mow" BFIVD920, which comes complete with a 60 page booklet. Probably too late for this year's Christmas stocking but who knows it may be available in the sales ;)

It's always good to see Lewes getting blown up - I used to work there and remember the preparations! haven't been to the Bonfire Night for years - bit difficult now I live about 150 miles away!

Post by: brianleach on Wednesday, December 19 2012 02:02PM GMT-1
I think I am well known for being in the don't like the Unthanks camp but I thought the programme was worth watching so I recorded it.

Sadly after 20 minutes I had to give up. I just don't know what it is about them that doesn't do it for me if you exclude the singing that is. I think they are just too earnest in that programme. It even made the Sheffield carol session look rather tedious. I also really hated the constant switching between modern and old footage. I suspect it was meant to compare and contrast but it just got annoying for me. In my opinion nowhere near as good as the previous programme they did.

Don't like Show of Hands or the Oysters and can take or leave Cara Dillon and Seth Lakeman.

However as Lorna says thank goodness for live and let live.

Having Bellowhead in was the Best Way Ever to start a new show.

I think the producers probably know what they're doing ;)

I like Mark Radcliffe (although he can get a bit ummm errrrry given too much time to burble on) but I think the show being so short made him not do that so much. And I believe he knows more about folk music than many people give him credit for. I really enjoyed it (apart from the, you know, Unthanks...I think he was choosing some of the music, he's a big fan of theirs). Haven't heard the Mike Harding podcast yet to compare it.

I am very intrigued about Chris Wood's new 'electric' stuff to be on in a couple of weeks. Will we get to shout 'Judas' at the radio  :D  ;) ?

I think the new Folkshow was great - and I'll say it again I really like the Unthanks  ;D - I get the idea they are deliberately trying to educate a new generation of listeners as well as actually making it a folk show again (as opposed to the rather unlistenable diddly diddly/American AOR mess it had become - sorry I hated Mike Harding doing it - drove me mad!).  I thought it was a good first attempt and I think Mark sounded a bit nervous - he knows that folk fans can be a tricky bunch to please - as I always say, folk fans will save your library for you then campaign that you haven't got the right books in it  ;)  One of the many reasons we're such a fun bunch....

Was it Sean Rafferty? I do find him a bit 'dismissive' of stuff he appears to be not very interested in. Often gives the impression of trying to get through it so he can get to the next item, and yes, appears under prepared  :-\.

Yes, it was Sean Rafferty, Fi. I thought, apart from being underprepared, he was very rude in not giving Jon time to reply - seemed to like the sound of his own voice too much.

BBC radio 2 on Tuesday at 22:00 - The Drunken Sailor - a look at the history etc of the Sea Shanty. Various contributors including Martin Carthy, Maddy Prior etc.

Also BBC 2 (TV) next Saturday - I think it's 21:30. The History of Music with Howard Goodall (I think!) - what it says on the tin - music from earliest beginnings. Might be worth a look.

Title: Re: TV/Radio Alerts
Post by: Outlandish Nightie on Saturday, August 2 2014 12:23PM GMT-1
Thanks for the links.  It did sound a bit ropey to begin with, to the extent that I thought the first few songs might actually put listeners off who don't know them.   They are definitely a visual band and I presume things were up to the usual standard in that regard, as the audience sounded to be enjoying themselves.  Plus it must be hard to break-in new songs live to a non-Bellowhead audience.  When you think of it, they haven't done that much of this type of thing (extended live sets on the radio) before so maybe that brought about some slight nerves and sound difficulties and also influenced the choice of songs.

I  know it's been and gone - but we watched last Wednesday's Midsomer Murders last night. It all happened during a small village Folk Festival, and just before the second murder (a huge speaker fell on him) - suddenly we could hear the familiar strains of "Whiskey is the life of man" playing in the background.

It also featured Jackie Oates and the venue was Nettlebed Folk Club.
The song which the episode was themed around was written and sung by Seth Lakeman, and also he was the voice of the dead singer!

Ah yes, last time we saw Jim Moray and Jackie Oates at Nettlebed they were calling for extras to be the audience for that.

There's the possibility of a Mabel in that episode. I shall have to investigate...

A couple of interesting programmes on iplayer." Secret knowledge -  in search of Rory McEwan" which slipped under the radar on Friday night. Also a history of hymn singing which I happened to notice when scrolling through and thought some might be interested in - think it's an Ulster Tv prog. Both on documentaries/history section of iplayer. Will try and remember to post links when not on phone!

Here are the links:

I hadn't realised there were two more.  That's good.  I've got to get to see the Wayward Band - I haven't seen Eliza for ages.
