What was the last album you bought before you discovered Bellowhead?
« on: Wednesday, August 24 2011 03:08PM GMT-1 »
I was going to post this in you know your obsessed when...There are two musical time frames in your life.
BBM (Before Bellowhead Music - in my case pop/indie/emocore) and ABM (After Bellowhead Music).

As of course music never sounds the same afterwards. ;)

Its funny you can see the defining time clearly in my music collection/itunes. As my musical taste changes. Afterwards its mainly folk music.

Think last album I bought BBM was by 'The Bees'.

Instead decided to ask....what was the last Album you bought BBM?

I never seemed to stop liking the stuff I liked before. I still have an unfortunate radiohead obssession and still listen to heavy metal on ocassion. Sometimes nothings better than metallica. I started listening to folk music when my mum was very ill and I couldn't listen to the other stuff i had before(not sure why just didn't sound right). Eventually I got the other stuff back again. Briefly the only thing I listened to was some Eliza carthy albums and natalie merchant. Red Rice still makes me feel better and has destressed me on several bad on call sessions

I listen to quite a lot of different stuff and always have, so I don't think my buying habits have changed that much due to Belolowhead. I think my 'turning point' (if you like) was EC's 'Red Rice'  :D

I can't remember either.  What was life like BB (before Bellowhead)?

It was seeing Seth Lakeman by chance at a festival that started me off down the folk route, so he was probably more my 'turning point', seeing Bellowhead for the first time and getting my first Bellowhead album 6 months later was more of a kick in the direction I'd already started on

Well we'd been listening to folk for years before Bellowhead - I think my turning point was probably The Shouting End of Life from Oysterband - at that point we were listening to a lot more non folk stuff than we do now.

Same here - only for me it was mainly Steeleye Span.  Bellowhead don't mark a turning point in my musical taste, but they have certainly marked a turning point in my gig going.

Yes, Steeleye was my entry into folk music too.  I probably haven't listened to anything other than "folk", whatever that means, since about 1980.

What discovereing Bellowhead changed about me was less my record buying habits but more my gig-going behaviour. Certainly most of the live music I go to see these days is folk. However, I've tried to work out what the album I bought immediately before I got Burlesque and I think it was Never Said Goodbye by Cerys Matthews who herself can be quite folky.

Bellowhead didn't change my musical tastes, they were already there ... I remember looking forward to their first ever gig, being already familiar with J&J's first two albums  8)  My folk and folk rock connection stretches back to 1980-81 when a friend lent me a copy of Jethro Tull's Songs From The Wood. In short order I started looking for folk-rock connections that took me to Cropredy, Cambridge and other festivals and lead me to a progressively folky outlook.

Cheers

I'm another one who can't really remember, but it was probably S&B or Eliza, although as Bellowhead were born at Oxford Folk Festival (pleeeeease make it come back next year!), it could have been something by someone else playing there that year.
