On Christmas Day
« on: Thursday, December 22 2011 12:35PM GMT-1 »
Fed up with all the Wham, Wizard and Mariah Carey that's been flying round the office, I foolishly emailed a link round to "On Christmas Day". In return I have received a rant from our resident Christian complaining about the dodgy theology in the lyrics (and basically accusing me of being anti-religious and probably damned for all eternity). Does anyone know anything about the song's origins? I need some facts with which to combat this folk-hating kill-joy. Google has failed me.

On the sleeve notes it says that "this depiction of Jesus clings on to the more Germanic, vengeful deity favoured by the earliest Anglo-Saxon converts to Christianity" and it was collected by Vaughan-Williams in Hertfordshire.

That's all I got. Hope it helps  :)

Thank you! I have lost my sleeve notes - a hazard of this digital age...
I will tell the godly one to take it up with the Germanic people of Hertfordshire.

Here are some links for you.  there was a period of enforced rest at Christmas and I think I read somewhere that the ploughs were all taken into the Churches.

Great! That's really useful. The Shropshire gypsies can take some of the blame too then.

Try emailing a link to The Bitter Withey as well if you really want to stir things up!
