Christmas isn't Christmas without the Magpie Lane and the Waits at the Holywell.

Steeleye at the Barbican next Monday. Looking forward to J & J a lot. Ambivalent about Steeleye. Too loud and don't like Terry Pratchett. Sorry, not my thing.

My husband doesn't.  He's wrong there as well, of course!

I've never read any Pratchett...

Next gig up: Tyde at the Unicorn on Thursday. Must remember to wrap up well! Currently undecided about any Magpie Lanes - either Woking or Oxford, but might have too much else to do to spend time gallivanting  ::)
Morris teams: HuMP and Taeppa's Tump

Don't think it's a male/female thing - my son loves Pratchett and has read them all. My mother read one and hated it! I hadn't read any, but am also going to the Barbican gig, so thought I'd read Wintersmith beforehand. I'm enjoying it and will probably read more.

Other gigs this month:
Bert Jansch tribute at SBC tonight.
Copper Family at Hadleigh (Essex) Sunday
Belshazzar's at Cecil Sharp 11th
Jim Causley at Greenwich 12th
Midwinter Festival at Leigh 14th
Kerfuffle at Shrewsbury 22nd

I think it depends a lot on which Pratchett you start with. Some of the early Discworld books are a bit weird and will have put a lot of people off where as some of the later ones are just the bees knees. Unfortunately to get the most from the later books you have to have read the previous ones and therein lies the problem.

I must confess to owning all the Discworld series and am currently reading the latest Raising Steam which is about the railways. Although I have read them all, I tend to forget what happened in each of them! I would have liked to have gone to the Barbican, especially as S&B were performing, but we are away.

I read them in order, starting at the beginning (I can't help it!).
